If the alternator fails to charge the battery, the car's electrical system will run out of the electricity it needs to operate.

Causes
Disconnected or Damaged Belt
The alternator is driven by the engine through an accessory belt. If the belt is off of either the alternator or the crankshaft pulley, the alternator will not be powered.
If the belt is damaged, it may become loose and not function properly.
Slow Engine Crank
The engine may be turning at an abnormal level, causing the alternator to run less efficiently.
Defective Alternator
The alternator itself may be malfunctioning and is unable to generate a charge.
