How to Change a Tire

Sometimes you have to replace a tire in order to continue on. Cars usually have a spare tire and jack that drivers can use in an emergency. Changing a tire is not that difficult and can be a handy skill to have.

Steps

Step 1: Remove Hubcap

A screwdriver can remove a hubcap easily. Place the screwdriver where the hubcap meets the wheel, and pry the hubcap off.

Step 2: Loosen lug nuts on wheel

With a tire iron, loosen the lug nuts on the wheel. Do not remove the wheel just yet. You may need a wheel lock in order to remove the lug nuts.

Step 3: Secure vehicle

Make sure the vehicle is on level ground. Place blocks at the wheels that will remain on the ground. Engage the parking brake. Put the vehicle in park if it is an automatic transmission. If it is a manual transmission, put it in first gear.

Step 4: Jack up vehicle

To determine the place where you should put the jack, consult your owners manual. As a general rule, you should never place the jack on a part of the vehicle that can bend or break under the weight of the car.

Once the jack is placed in the proper position, raise the vehicle. Then, insure the vehicle is secure by wiggling the car.

Step 5: Remove old wheel

Remove the lug nuts and the wheel.

Step 6: Place the new wheel in its place

Lift or roll(assuming you have a ramp) the new wheel into position. Screw the lug nuts by hand so the wheel is somewhat secure.

Step 7: Lower the vehicle

Lower the vehicle via the jack slowly.

Step 8: Tighten lug nuts and replace hub cap

Once the vehicle is on the ground, the use the tire iron to tighten the lug nuts as much as you can. Replace the hubcap.

Step 9: Remove jack and store the old tire

Place the jack and old tire in the trunk, or garage. Don't forget to remove the wheel blocks before driving off.
